Many developers built planned neighborhoods of homes in the area. One of the most well-known and prolific, Orin Thompson, planted an apple tree in the yard of each home that he built. When the city incorporated in 1968, the residents chose to honor his tradition and his contribution to their city by naming their new city Apple Valley.

Apple Valley is located just twelve miles south of both Minneapolis and St. Paul, and is considered part of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. It covers just about 17 square miles, and is about 75% developed today. Perhaps the most famous attraction in Apple Valley is the Minnesota Zoo. The state of the art zoo is considered among the nation’s best year round zoos, with a collection of over 2,700 animals living in their natural habitats. Discovery Bay, the Zoo’s marine exhibits, features both a dolphin and a shark tank.

In addition to the zoo, Apple Valley offers myriad opportunities for outdoor recreation, with miles of undeveloped woods and park land for hiking, biking, hunting, fishing and boating. The Valleywood Golf Course is a nationally known championship executive golf course.

Schools in Apple Valley are under the aegis of District #196, serving Apple Valley, Rosemount and Eagan. The district consists of eighteen elementary schools, five middle schools and three high schools. The district also offers alternative education courses for those who don’t complete traditional high school and the School of Environmental Studies at the Minnesota Zoo. School District #196 has been awarded multiple trophies for student achievement in speech, math, science and athletics.

Real estate prices in Apple Valley are surprisingly affordable, with single family homes starting at $175,000 and ranging up to $2,000,000. The average home selling price is $250,000 for a single family home. Other options for housing in Apple Valley include condominiums, multi family dwellings, apartments and town houses.
