Big Lake Minnesota Information
Located about 40 miles north of the Twin Cities, Big Lake was once a destination for day trips and escapes from the city. Now it is considered a suburb of the Twin Cities, with a significant portion of residents commuting into the metro area daily. With the area?s new-found popularity have come new businesses and redevelopment projects.
Big Lake Minnesota Real Estate
Big Lake MN real estate is great investment. Big Lake offers a country living, just 35 minutes from Minneapolis. Located on the shores of both Big Lake and Mitchell Lake, this city has a wide variety of water-recreation activities to offer its residents. Owners of Big Lake homes enjoy the local parks as well as the Sand Dunes State Forest and Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. Big Lake is striving towards re-developing what has been the community's industry historically: recreation and tourism. Big Lake's goal is to once again become a destination for day and weekend trips.
Big Lake is roughly 45 miles away from the Minneapolis/St. Paul International airport and 28 miles from the St. Cloud Regional Airport. The City of Big Lake is also destined to be the home to the northern most stop of the Northstar Commuter Rail. The rail will provide access from Big Lake all the way down to Minneapolis, while making stops in Elk River, Anoka, and Coon Rapids before connecting to the Hiawatha Lite Rail Line. The implications of this project are significant, as it will provide transit-oriented development, additional jobs, new lifestyle opportunities for residents, incentive to develop more multi-family residences, as well as single family homes, and more. This quick link to the Twin Cities is set for completion in 2009.
Homes for Sale in Big Lake Minnesota
Even before the rail is done, though, Big Lake is already a rapidly growing community. In 2006, Sherburne County reported that the city's population is about 9,174, up from about 6,063 at the 2000 Census. Though a majority of the homes in this city were built between 1970 and 1999, since 2000, there have been over 1,100 single family homes built in Big Lake. In June 2007, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Big Lake, MN was $199,392.
New Homes in Big Lake Minnesota
There are many things to consider when choosing whether to buy a new home or an existing home. In general, new homes are usually more fire-safe and better accommodating of new security and garage-door systems. Builders have to follow very strict guidelines when constructing new-homes and additions. The advanced technology does come at a price, however. Existing homes tend to have a lot of character. The charm of an older home often goes hand in hand with increased maintenance. Older homes are also less energy efficient. One thing that some people don't think about however, is landscaping. Mature trees, shrubs, gardens, and greener lawns are some rewards of purchasing an older home. Most new homes have small trees, sparse vegetation, and fewer sidewalks.
Big Lake Minnesota Home Builders
Finding and hiring the right builder for your home is essential to its successful completion. If you skip the research process and don't do your homework, you could waste thousands dollars or worse yet, end up with a flawed home. Doing the legwork in order to choose the right builder can save a lot of stress and money. Ask the builder as many questions as you can about cost, quality, warranties, customization, timelines, and more. Insist on three references on individual, completed projects that you can inspect. Be sure to interview each owner thoroughly.
