Hopkins is a community steeped history, growth and progress. The city's character is evident to those who visit the city, located just two miles east of Minnetonka and 10 miles west of Minneapolis. Hopkins offers residents all the advantages of the big city, while retaining a suburban small-town feeling.
Hopkins' city climate and demographics are two of it's defining features. They include:

- Maximum temperature of 60-86 degrees F in summer
- Annual precipitation average (including both rain and snowfall) is 30 inches
- 3,700 of the 8,200 households are occupied by families
- 22% of households include one or more children under 18

- 38% owner-occupancy rate
Community Hopkins provides its residents with plenty of recreational facilities, including the Hopkins Center for the Arts located in the Downtown area, and the Hopkins Pavilion, providing facilities for ice and figure skating, soccer, baseball, softball and other sports, as well as sporting and other events all year round. The city also boasts no less than six outdoor skating rinks, and several public parks. For beach-lovers, Shady Oak Beach in Minnetonka is just a couple of miles away.
Education The Hopkins School District serves several western Minneapolis suburbs in addition to the city of Hopkins. There are seven elementary schools, two junior high schools, and one high school in the district, as well as four private schools (including a Montessori School) and a performing arts school.
Across the city, residents also have indicated support for redevelopment and new development, targeted at "starter homes" and "move-up" homes, as well as retail shopping and dining offerings. In addition, residents also strongly favor redevelopment to improve the downtown Hopkins area.
A recent survey of 400 Hopkins citizens shows that they are very pleased with their community. Overall satisfaction ratings place the city solidly within the top 25 percent of Metropolitan Area suburbs and among the highest ranking "inner ring" communities. Hopkins residents are clearly satisfied with past policies and the city's future.
