Lake Hiawatha MN Real Estate

When the Minneapolis Park System purchased Lake Hiawatha in 1922, this area was little more than a swamp. Over several years, the entire area was transformed, and today Lake Hiawatha and the surrounding parklands are an attractive place for a wide variety of recreational activities.

At 55 acres and a maximum depth of 33 feet, Lake Hiawatha is one of Minneapolis’ smaller lakes. However, despite the lake’s smaller size it is extensively developed, and owners of Lake Hiawatha, Minneapolis real estate have easy access to plenty of recreational fun. While the lake itself is relatively small, the surrounding park covers nearly 270 acres, and the Lake Hiawatha Playground covers eight acres alone.

Residents can enjoy boating, fishing and swimming on the lake and its attractive beaches, and Lake Hiawatha Park provides many more activities. The park is a beautifully-planned area with a range of activities including facilities for basketball, tennis, soccer and softball, as well as a hockey rink, walking paths, and a wading pool and playground for kids. Golfing enthusiasts will love owning Lake Hiawatha, Minneapolis real estate—the municipal Hiawatha Golf Course borders the lake. During the winter months, residents and visitors can traverse a four kilometer cross country skiing trail that covers the golf course.

Lake Hiawatha and the adjacent park and golf course are located within the neighborhood of Ericsson in south east Minneapolis. While the western portion of Ericsson is mainly recreational land, the eastern half is a predominantly residential neighborhood with great opportunities for people interested in purchasing Lake Hiawatha, Minneapolis real estate. The majority of homes in Ericsson are single family residences, and together with the adjacent neighborhood of Standish, residents of the area are strongly committed to maintaining their neighborhoods as secure and attractive environments, with a highly active Neighborhood Association that welcomes resident’s involvement.
