Long Lake MN is home to 1,842 residents and 254 businesses. Covering just 1 square mile, the city of Long Lake is surrounded by the city of Orono. The two cities have cooperative agreements covering various services including police and fire protection. Because Long Lake has a post office, some Orono residents and businesses have a Long Lake address. There are four parks in Long Lake and the Luce Line, a rails-to-trails hiking and biking trail, runs just south of the city. Long Lake is also home to the Pioneer museum run by the West Hennepin County Pioneer association.

Orono Public School District 278 is a small school district serving all or part of Independence, Long Lake, Maple Plain, Medina, Minnetonka Beach, and Orono. The district is organized into four schools on a 120-acre central campus nestled against 2,000 feet of lakeshore.
