Minneapolis Neighborhoods

Located in the North-West of Minneapolis, the neighborhood of Near North is named simply for its location-north of Downtown, on the west bank of the Mississippi.

Near North is home to several historical landmarks, including the Sumner Community Library, which opened in 1915. The library is built in the Tudor Revival style and is named for U.S. Senator Charles Sumner. Most of the Near North area was developed in the late nineteenth century, and there are several industries located along the banks of the river.

Near North - Minneapolis MN Homes & Condos MLS

With approximately six thousand residents, Near North is a neighborhood which is home to proportionately more families than most other Minneapolis neighborhoods. This is an area with a diverse ethnic background, and architectural styles which are just as varied.

While many residential areas of Near North have fallen into disrepair in recent decades, the Northside Resident Redevelopment Council has worked hard to improve the neighborhood, working to renovate and refurbish apartments and single-family homes, as well as providing assistance for local small businesses. The NRRC works closely with residents, business owners and government agencies with the intent of creating a thriving, stable community.
