Located on the Western bank of the Mississippi River, Seward was named after William Seward, an American Secretary of State during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln. Perhaps the most notable feature of Seward is the Milwaukee Avenue Mall Area. This pedestrian-only street, two blocks in length, is home to many historic structures, including several residences.

Just over half of the neighborhood's 400 acres is designated residential, and twenty percent designated industrial (the industrial area is confined to the south-west portion of the neighborhood). The eastern area of the neighborhood is lined with parks that border the river, and the character of this area is further enhanced by a group of restored rail worker's homes built towards the end of the nineteenth century.

A recently-constructed light rail line connects Seward with the Downtown district and the airport among other places, so the neighborhood's 7,500 residents can enjoy all the amenities of Downtown while living in this picturesque area. Many residents of Seward are education or medical professionals, thanks to its proximity to both the University of Minnesota and the Fairview-Riverside Medical Center.

Seward residents play an active role in their community; the Seward Neighborhood Group is one of the oldest such organizations in the city, and is involved in community development, environmental programs, and a number of youth-oriented programs as well.
