Minneapolis Neighborhoods

Located in the South East section of Minneapolis, the neighborhood of Standish is named for its local elementary school, which itself takes its name from a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Standish is connected to several other Minneapolis neighborhoods, including the central Downtown district, by means of a light rail system. The homes in this predominantly residential neighborhood were built mainly by Norwegian and Swedish immigrants in the early 1900s. New residential areas are springing up along what is known as the Hiawatha Avenue Corridor, located in the Eastern section of Standish. The low crime rate and variety of recreational activities available makes this a great area for anyone who's looking for a safe, secure neighborhood.

There's a real community feel in Standish, with several active public organizations including churches, the YMCA and similar clubs, as well as many parks, playgrounds, and recreational centers both in Standish and the adjacent neighborhood of Ericsson. Nearby Sibley Park, an attractive, well-maintained recreational area offers fun for family outings, with scenic walk-ways, tennis courts, and a playground and wading pool.

Standish is a quiet neighborhood with a population of around seven thousand, with all the advantages of a busy city-thanks to the light rail system, Downtown Minneapolis, great shopping in nearby St. Paul, and some of the biggest and best parks in the city are just minutes away.
