Minneapolis Neighborhoods

Whittier is a neighborhood in the south side of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The neighborhood is bound by Franklin Avenue, Interstate 35W, Lake Street West and Lyndale Avenue South.

Whittier is one of Minneapolis' oldest neighborhoods and was settled in the early 19th century. Whittier is named after Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whittier. Within the community of Whittier, Blaisdell Avenue and Third Avenue boast some of the oldest houses in the city of Minneapolis, as well, on Stevens Avenue, there are some beautifully restored homes.

There are 348 acres of land for Whittier neighborhood and almost 40 per cent of that is used for multi-family housing, of those, nearly 90 per cent are renter occupied. Sixty per cent of the land includes a wide variety of uses other than just homes, including businesses, a children's theatre, an art school and eclectic restaurants. The Minneapolis Institute of Arts calls the neighborhood of Whittier home.

This old neighborhood boasts beautiful architecture and many families live in the area. In the 90s, the City of Lakes Waldorf School and Watershed High School moved to Whittier. Both of the schools renovated the American Hardware Mutual Insurance Company building which was constructed in 1922 for their school home ground.
