The word "Minnetonka" comes from the Dakota Indian mni tanka and it means "great water." The natural scenery of Minnetonka includes mature trees, flora and fauna filled wetlands, and rolling prairies. Since the mid-1800s Minnetonka has evolved from heavily wooded wilderness through extensive farming and thriving industrialization to its present primarily residential suburban character. Minnetonka continues to be home to many major corporate headquarters, including Carlson Companies and Cargill, Inc. Residents enjoy shopping at Ridgedale Center. A solid economic base, including the Opus Center, a large mixed-use development of office, light industrial, hotel, and residential areas, provides employment opportunities within the city.
Minnetonka MN Schools
Minnetonka is covered by three school districts. The students in the central and eastern portions of the city go to Hopkins School District. On the west side, students attend the Minnetonka School District. Students in the northern portions of town attend the Wayzata School District. There are also private schools from which to choose.
