Minneapolis Ranks in the Top 5 for Women's Health

This summer, Women’s Health magazine came up with their list of the five best cities for healthy, happy, and fit women. Women’s Health magazine, a national publication with a circulation of 1.5 million copies, ranks Minneapolis as the fifth best city in the U.S. for women to live. An editorial team researched cities based on health, fitness, and emotional well being to determine their results.

According to Women's Health:

With 929 lakes and 13 miles of paved shoreline paths in the Minneapolis St.Paul area, it's not surprising that Minneapolis has the fourth-highest number of female joggers as well as one of the lowest breast-cancer death rates.

"Preliminary research suggests that women who are physically active may have a 30 to 40 percent lower chance of developing breast cancer," says Jennifer Ligibel, M.D., an oncologist at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. "Regular workouts may help prevent the disease by lowering levels of estrogen and other hormones, which have been linked to the formation of breast tumors."

Aim for 45 minutes of exercise five days a week.

The other top 5 cities Women'sHealth ranks are:

San Jose, California, was listed at number one position because it has some of the lowest levels of depression in America and at least 30% of women there work out twice a week. Also, San Jose averages 300 sunny days a year, so residents soak up mood-boosting serotonin and vitamin D.

Madison, Wisconsin, came in second place. Women who live in Madison are living to ripe old ages. Part of that may have to do with the fact that it is also has one of the fittest populations in the nation.

Seattle, Washington, was listed in third place. Women in Seattle are the least likely to die from heart disease (the leading killer of women), and just 10 people per 100,000 die of heart attacks here each year. With easy access to organic fruit markets, 28% of Seattle women claim to snack on fruits and veggies at least five times a day!

Aurora, Colorado, ranked at fourth place on Women’sHealth magazine's list of top cities for women. Aurora was actually at the top of the list for women's fitness. That shouldn't be surprising that they rank high for overall health as good nutrition and regular exercise effect women's mental and emotional well-being just as much as it effects their physical well-being.

Saint Paul has also ranked reasonably well for women's health. The magazine listed St. Paul at #27 overall. See the full listing of all the best and worst cities for women.

This isn't the first time that the Twin Cities have been determined a great place for women to live. Earlier this month, ForbesWoman released its list of U.S. cities that offer the most to working moms. Minneapolis - St. Paul unseated New York as the No. 1 ranked city for working mothers.
